VSTAR! Tape Utility

In today's computer marketplace, many facilities will have a variety of computer platforms. UNISYS sites will often have UNIX based platforms installed in conjunction with their proprietary A Series system. These customers typically need to move large amounts of data between their systems in a short period of time. Data transfers are accomplished in far less time using tape media rather than normal data communications methods. In addition, the use of tape media does not add any overhead to the communication network or require expensive high communication software.

VSTAR! is a mainframe based, file backup and transfer software product which can be run from CANDE or COMS. This utility allows the A Series to read and write tape archives in the standard UNIX Tape Archive & Retrieval ("TAR") format. VSTAR! can archive information to any storage device attached to the A Series; either a disk drive or any tape drive. Once archived, tar tapes can be exchanged between A Series and UNIX systems with compatible tape drives.

Key Benefits

  • Uses standard UNIX "TAR" syntax. This reduces the learning curve allowing users to take advantage of the program instantaneously with existing hardware.
  • Utilizes standard UNISYS MCP 3.6 or greater without any modifications. This means customers do not have to upgrade to the current level of MCP, avoiding significant MCP licensing fees and possible business interruption.
  • Is a mainframe based program which means any authorized user can initiate a backup from any terminal device connected to the A Series, (i.e. T27's, PC's running PCLink!, etc...) to any tape or disk drive on the system. In addition, the program can be executed from a WFL, for unattended archiving.
  • Allows users to create a script file that defines what files are backed up, the file type to translate to, and the UNIX file name and directory location. This script file method reduces user errors by eliminating the need to type in file names every time on long command lines, and improves overall productivity.
  • Automatically converts the appropriate files for immediate use on the UNIX system. This simplifies the assimilation of data into existing programs.
